Job Overview
The Locum Anaesthesiology Registrar plays a key role in delivering advanced anaesthetic care and supporting consultant-led services across a range of surgical specialties. The role involves greater clinical responsibility than SHO level, including independent anaesthetic management of routine cases, supervision of junior staff, and active participation in emergency and critical care services.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer anaesthesia independently for elective and emergency surgical procedures, under consultant supervision where required.
- Perform comprehensive pre-operative assessments, formulate anaesthetic plans, and obtain informed consent where appropriate.
- Manage intra-operative care, including advanced airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, and crisis intervention.
- Oversee post-operative recovery, pain management, and management of complications.
- Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in clinical duties.
- Participate in on-call rotas, including emergency anaesthesia, trauma, obstetrics, and critical care cases.
- Assist in intensive care unit (ICU) management where required.
- Ensure accurate, detailed, and timely documentation of patient care.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Participate in clinical audits, teaching, and continuous professional development activities.
- Adhere to hospital policies, clinical governance standards, and patient safety guidelines.
Requirements
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) recognized by the Irish Medical Council (IMC).
- Active IMC registration (General or Specialist Division, as applicable).
- Minimum of 3–5 years of postgraduate clinical experience, with significant exposure to anaesthesia.
- Demonstrated competency in anaesthetic procedures and perioperative care.
- Valid certifications such as BLS and ACLS; ATLS or equivalent is desirable.
- Previous experience in ICU, emergency medicine, or subspecialty anaesthesia (e.g., obstetric, paediatric) is advantageous.
- Right to work in Ireland (EU/EEA citizenship or appropriate visa/work permit).
