Consultant Ophthalmologist
Location: Ireland - South of Ireland
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary Scale: €200,000 - €240,000 Euro plus excellent bonus
️ Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and patient-focused Consultant Ophthalmologist to join progressive ophthalmic multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will deliver world-class clinical and surgical care to our diverse patient base, leading a team of registrars, orthoptists, technicians, and specialized nurses.
You will have access to state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, dedicated ophthalmic theatres
We welcome candidates with general ophthalmic expertise as well as those with subspecialty interests.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence: Deliver high-quality outpatient and inpatient consultant care, including complex diagnostic and treatment pathways.
Surgical Procedures: Perform high-volume cataract surgeries, intravitreal injections, and specialized laser treatments (YAG/Argon).
Team Leadership: Provide active clinical governance, mentorship, and supervision to Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) and training registrars.
Service Development: Collaborate on strategic clinical improvements and innovative community shared-care pathways.
On-Call Duties: Participate in the Consultant on-call rota according to service requirements.
Essential Criteria & Qualifications
IMC Specialist Registration: Must hold (or be fully eligible for) immediate registration in the Specialist Division of Ophthalmology with the Irish Medical Council (IMC).
Professional Fellowship: Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI Ophth) or an equivalent recognized international qualification.
Clinical Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of satisfactory experience in recognized higher specialist training or consultant-level hospital ophthalmic posts.
Language Proficiency: Excellent English communication skills (IELTS/OET requirements met where applicable).
Soft Skills: Proven clinical leadership, robust interpersonal skills, and a commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork.
