Excel Recruitment is proud to partner with a brand new state-of-the-art oncology centre in Limerick, to recruit an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Medical Oncology.
This is a unique opportunity to join a service at inception, where specialist nursing leadership, innovation, and evidence-based practice are central to how care is designed and delivered.
Overview of the Role
The Clinical Nurse Specialist Medical Oncology will provide expert, autonomous nursing care to patients diagnosed with cancer, supporting them throughout diagnosis, active treatment, and survivorship.
The CNS will act as a key point of contact for patients and families, providing specialist clinical assessment, symptom management, psychosocial support, education, and telephone triage using validated tools such as UKONS.
Working as part of the acute haematology and oncology multidisciplinary team, the CNS will ensure high-quality, safe, and evidence-based care in line with NCCP guidelines, national standards, and organisational policies.
Key Responsibilities
The CNS will provide both direct and indirect specialist nursing care, including:
- Deliver a specialist nursing service to patients with a new or existing cancer diagnosis
- Undertake comprehensive patient assessments (physical, psychological, social, spiritual)
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualised plans of care in collaboration with the MDT
- Monitor patient response to SACT and manage treatment-related toxicities
- Undertake unscheduled patient reviews in oncology/haematology day units
- Provide telephone triage and clinical advice using the UKONS framework
- Coordinate investigations, treatment pathways, and follow-up care
- Provide patient and family education pre-, during, and post-treatment
- Support medication reconciliation and polypharmacy management
- Promote symptom control, self-management strategies, and escalation pathways
- Lead development and implementation of evidence-based policies, procedures, and guidelines (PPPGs)
- Support survivorship services in line with HIQA and national best practice
- Act as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, pharmacy, and allied health colleagues
- Advocate for patients and families throughout the cancer journey
- Support informed decision-making and shared care planning
- Challenge practices that compromise quality or safety of care
Education & Training
- Maintain expert clinical competence in cancer nursing
- Actively engage in Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
- Provide leadership in oncology nursing practice
- Act as a clinical role model and specialist resource
- Support integrated care models across acute, community, and voluntary services
- Develop collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Registration as a General Nurse on the active register of the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- A recognised post-registration qualification in Oncology Nursing (Higher Diploma / Postgraduate qualification or in pursuit of same)
- Minimum 4 years post-registration experience in cancer care / medical oncology
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT)
- Competent in IV and oral chemotherapy administration
- Competent in CVAD access, maintenance, and care
- Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred cancer care
- Strong interest in service development, audit, and education
