Excel Recruitment is proud to partner with a brand-new cancer centre in Limerick to recruit a Chief Medical Physicist to lead and develop its high performing Radiation Oncology Physics service.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced Medical Physicist who combines clinical excellence with strategic leadership and a passion for innovation and patient outcomes.
This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to shape clinical practice, lead a multidisciplinary physics team, and contribute to innovation, research, and service development in a modern radiotherapy environment.
The Opportunity:
- Provide clinical, scientific, and strategic leadership for Radiotherapy Physics across treatment planning, dosimetry, imaging, and QA.
- Shape service development, clinical governance, and risk management in line with Irish and EU radiation protection legislation (including medical exposures regulations) and best practice.
- Lead a capable multidisciplinary physics team; attract, develop, and mentor talent; foster a culture of safety, learning, and research.
- Drive technology optimisation and capital projects (e.g., LINAC replacement/commissioning, TPS upgrades, imaging and adaptive workflows).
- Partner with Radiation Oncology, Radiography, Nursing, and Hospital Management to deliver safe, efficient, and patient‑centred care.
Key Responsibilities
- Accountable for day‑to‑day delivery and continuous improvement of Radiotherapy Physics services, including QA programmes for external beam and brachytherapy.
- Oversee treatment planning systems, verification/imaging (IGRT/CBCT), and dosimetry, ensuring traceability and audit readiness.
- Lead commissioning/validation of new equipment, software, and clinical techniques (e.g., VMAT/SBRT/SRS/HDR); author and approve SOPs.
- Chair/participate in safety and governance forums; manage incident learning and compliance reporting.
- Manage budgets, workforce planning, vendor relationships, and service contracts; evaluate and implement innovation with measurable benefit.
- Contribute to teaching, research, and collaborations with universities and national networks.
Essential:
- PhD or MSc in Medical Physics or a related discipline from an accredited programme
- Registered Medical Physics Expert (Ireland), or Recognised European / UK training, or US (DABR) / Canadian equivalent registration.
- Have at least six years satisfactory experience, (at least three of which were at senior level), in one or more of the following fields: Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Protection Procedures, Clinical Engineering, Radiological Physics, Radiotherapy or Medical Imaging.
- Strong background in linear accelerator calibration and periodic QA
- Demonstrated leadership and people management experience
- Experience with 3-D conformal radiotherapy, brachytherapy and treatment planning systems
- Experience with radiosurgery and IMRT/VMAT essential.
- Extensive experience and knowledge of calibration of linear accelerators and periodical quality assurance.
